World
Debt Day to take place 16 May 2004
Jubilee Debt Campaign will hold an international day of action
on Sunday 16 May 2004. Jubilee Debt Campaign is part of the
global movement calling for the cancellation of the unpayable
debts of the world's poorest nations. The date -16th May - has
been chosen to commemorate the first mass action in the UK of
the Jubilee 2000 Campaign (the forerunner to the Jubilee Debt
Campaign).
On 16 May in 1998, at the G8 Summit in Birmingham, UK, 70,000
people formed a human chain around Tony Blair, Bill Clinton,
and other world leaders to call for a debt free start to the
new millennium. This year's anniversary of that event will
be a chance not only to celebrate the debt cancellation the
Jubilee movement has already achieved but also to
take a sober look at the financial burdens still shackling
poor countries.
A message will be sent from around the globe to the leaders
of the world most powerful countries ( who will meet at the
G8 summit in the US June 8th 9th 2004) that true security will
not be achieved with out ending global poverty. Faith groups
and other debt activists worldwide have promised their full
support to campaign actively to ensure that World Debt is at
the top of the G8 agenda.
